Trustee of the Association for Project Management

Voluntary role

Commitment around 10 to 20 days a year for 3 years

The award-winning Association for Project Management (APM) is the Chartered body for the project profession. APM is a registered educational charity with over 27,000 individual and 600 corporate members making it the largest professional body of its kind in Europe. APM is committed to developing and promoting a professional approach to project management through our broad offering of professional membership, qualifications, publications, resources, research and events. On 31 October 271 project professionals from across the UK and overseas became the first Chartered Project Professionals in the world, gaining a place on the APM’s new Register of Chartered Project Professionals.They came from nearly 50 different sectors; construction, defence, education, finance, engineering and technology and more. Project management is taking its rightful place amongst other chartered professions. Our vision for the profession is ambitious, challenging and radical. Above all, it reflects what society expects: a world in which all projects succeed.

We are looking to appoint a trustee from outside the project profession, to join APM’s dynamic and engaged Board at an exciting time of huge potential for the profession. This promises to be a rewarding position for the right person.

This is an opportunity to use your skills and experience in the governance of some fantastic work in furthering project management as a profession. Strong networking capability that can be utilised for the benefit of the charity is essential, as is the ability to challenge ‘groupthink’

The successful candidate will preferably have experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a Board of Trustees or directors. You will demonstrate a strong and visible passion and commitment to the charity, its strategic objectives and cause.

The responsibilities of the trustee include:

  • Strategic decision making – experience at senior level of evaluating information and making justifiable decisions to set the strategy for an organisation. Experience of one or more of the following sectors is essential: finance, technology, education and international.
  • Delivering results and engaging people – experience of working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver an organisation’s strategy.
  • Corporate governance – ability to apply the principles and practice of corporate governance and an understanding of the role of non-executive directors.

The role is unremunerated, but expenses will be paid in accordance with APM’s expenses policy.

The Association for Project Management (APM was first incorporated in 1972 and commenced operating under its new Royal Charter on 1 April 2017. The object of APM is ‘to advance the science, theory and practice of project and programme management for the public benefit’. Detail on APM and its Charter can be found at apm.org.uk
