CHAIR AND MEMBERS, BOARD OF GOVERNORS
With a heritage of some 160 years, Bath Spa is a leading university in creativity, culture and enterprise. It is student-centred, offering innovative teaching and learning, focussed research excellence and state-of-the-art facilities. It has recently embarked on a strategic plan that will see it increasing student numbers by around 40% by 2020, investing in estates and infrastructure, further enhancing the student experience, growing its international footprint and developing its research base.
The University is governed by a Board of Governors which has overall responsibility for the strategy, direction and performance of the institution. The board comprises a range of high calibre individuals bringing a combination of lay and academic backgrounds. A new Chair is sought to lead the board, ensuring quality governance and compliance, mentoring and holding senior executives accountable, and providing external representation as appropriate.
The University is also seeking Board members from diverse backgrounds with an interest and insight into the issues facing higher education. The Chair and Governors will bring thoughtful and mature contribution to board meetings, be principled yet innovative. A willingness to be challenging but constructive and a strong strategic focus are essential for these roles.
Particular skillsets and backgrounds which are attractive in these roles will include:
- International business / marketing;
- IT / technology / digital sectors;
- Leadership experience in HE;
- Education (particularly school level) policy and government engagement;
- Finances and investment.
The role of Chair is likely to require a time commitment of around two days per month, and for Governors about ten days per annum. All roles are unremunerated, although reasonable expenses will be covered.
