The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We work with over 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society. Each year we reach over 20 million people face-to-face and more than 500 million people online, via broadcasts and publications. Founded in 1934, we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body. We have a turnover in excess of £1bn with £800m of this self-generated by our global businesses.

We are currently looking for an outstanding individual to join our Board of Trustees to shape our future and help us make a positive impact in the UK and across the world. We always seek diverse individuals who bring knowledge, perspective and passion to the Trustee role.

This is a unique opportunity for individuals with strong leadership credentials and relevant interests to contribute to the British Council’s mission.

We seek a qualified accountant with sophisticated and practical international finance skills gained in an audit or director of finance role. Please see the embedded Role Profile - Trustee Finance.docx for further details on the Finance background Trustee.

Key responsibilities and challenges include (non-exhaustive):

  • Ensuring that the British Council has a clear vision, mission and strategic direction
  • Holding the executive responsible for delivering these
  • Taking responsibility for the organisation’s performance and for its corporate behaviour
  • Ensuring that the British Council complies with all legal, regulatory and financial requirements and that corporate governance is of the highest standard
  • Acting as guardian of British Council reputation and assets, both tangible and intangible
