The Co-op is looking for candidates with boardroom experience from its membership to join its Board, and make an active contribution to the future success of this iconic business.

As a Member Nominated Director, along with safeguarding the interests of our members’ business across the UK, you’ll oversee the commercial and financial performance, as well as the risk and internal audit framework. As the voice of our members in the boardroom, you’ll ensure we keep to the Values and Principles that are at the heart of every Co-op.

The Co-op is one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives. Today, we continue to make a major contribution to the economic and social wellbeing of the UK. We have business interests in the Food, Funeral, General Insurance, Legal Services and Electrical sectors.

In 2017 we will complete a three year rebuild programme. Central to this is the roll-out of our new brand and membership offer, which rewards our members and their local communities. The development of this new “Co-op economy” will stimulate new product development and service innovation, as well as influencing heavily our future campaigning and community-based strategies.

Potential candidates must demonstrate:-

  • An accomplished track record at an equivalent level in a substantial organisation and awareness of the strategic and operational challenges of a business of the size and complexity of The Co-op.
  • The highest standard of integrity, independence and empathy with our Values and Principles, alongside the broad experience required of any non-executive director.
  • The ability to contribute, at board level, on a range of commercial and financial issues while developing and maintaining an excellent working relationship with our Members’ Council, which represents our millions of members.
  • A commitment to best in class governance and oversight.

There are two Member Nominated Director positions available. If you are selected as a candidate, you will be put forward, along with others, to take part in a contested election in which our members will vote. If you are successful you will be appointed to the Board after our AGM in May 2017.

The time commitment for the role is 3-4 days a month as a minimum however to be fully involved with our businesses and our Members’ Council the time needed is likely to be greater. The Board meets monthly in Manchester with occasional meetings in London. The remuneration is commensurate with the role and responsibilities.
