We are recruiting for a Chair and four Trustees for the Creative Land Trust: a new and ambitious start-up charity. The Creative Land Trust has been established by the Mayor of London, Arts Council England, Outset Contemporary Art Fund and Bloomberg Philanthropies. The Trust sits at the heart of the Mayor’s ambition to protect affordable workspace for the creative sector and is part of his Culture Strategy.

The Creative Land Trust is a new organisation established to secure long-term affordable space for artists. In just 3 years London has lost 17% of studio spaces and our artists are being driven out. The Creative Land Trust is an ambitious project that will bring together grant and investment funding to help alleviate the loss of studio space.

Our challenge is to secure 1,000 affordable workspaces in the first five years, helping artists to flourish and helping to maintain London’s status as an international cultural capital.

We are looking for an experienced and inspirational Chair and Board of Trustees to help us deliver our ambitious vision. You need to be comfortable working in the worlds of the arts, property, charity, finance and fundraising. We want committed team players who are creative thinkers and doers.

Essential Criteria for Trustee Appointments

Are you passionate about saving London’s artists? Do you have skills, contacts, time or perspectives that you’d like to contribute to getting more people than ever thinking, talking and acting on saving the future of the capital’s creative workforce and artist community by creating workspaces?

This is a start-up Board so this is a pivotal position for someone willing to commit time and make a strategic contribution as a learning partner to the board. As a Chair at the Creative Land Trust you would provide on-going strategic direction, critical challenge and helping hands to ensure the Creative Land Trust has the biggest impact possible. We want our Chair and Trustees to support and provide governance of the highest quality and rigour as the organisation enters its first phases.

We are looking for members whose names dominate their areas of industry. Ideally, candidates will have a proven track record in two or more of the following areas

  • Fundraising - grant and donor fundraising from HNWIs, crowdfunding. Specifically, you can unlock funds to buildings.
  • Funds - investment funds, charity bonds, understanding private investment market and institutional investor market.
  • Charities - third sector leadership, charity accounting, regulations and governance.
  • The Arts - commitment to the arts, ideally with a recognisable name. Specifically anything related to the arts and urban regeneration and the role of culture in the city.
  • Property - asset managers, developers, people who have developed and managed space.
  • Public sector - either academic institution or local authority (not current), knowledge of public sector land, regeneration projects
  • Space providers - to avoid conflicts of interest, only trustees who no longer hold current space prover roles can be considered.
  • Connections to networks of people whose expertise the Creative Land Trust may benefit, and a willingness to use those connections for the Trust’s benefit.
  • Experience of operating as a trustee or non-executive director, or evidence of transferable skills including:
    • Strategic capability, sharp mind and good judgement
    • Ability to build strong relationships and act as an ambassador, commanding respect and influencing key stakeholders within own sphere of expertise or more widely
    • Demonstrate understanding of respective roles and responsibilities of non-executives, executives, and of collective decision-making
  • A mind-set aligned to the Trust and its Board of Trustees, including:
    • Independent; able to challenge and support
    • Creative and enthusiastic about the arts and making a difference
    • Team player
    • Honest and transparent

Additional Requirement for the Chair Position

In addition to the above, the Chair requires the following attributes:

  • Strategic leadership skills to shape our vision and strategy
  • Strong financial and governance skills
  • Significant experience in a leadership role in one of the key sectors in which we will operate.

Person Specification

In addition to meeting the above Essential Criteria, you should be able to demonstrate the following criteria:

  • You should be an energetic and informed advocate for the creative industries – you share our energy and positivity.
  • You’re willing to devote time, enthusiasm and effort to the duties and responsibilities of being a trustee.
  • You have great strategic insight.
  • You have independent judgement and willingness to challenge.
  • You are committed to the ethos and values of the organisation.
  • You have the ability to powerfully articulate the importance of work in your own words and connect it to the big picture (desirable).
  • You have experience of being a charity trustee (desirable).

Job Description

Statutory Duties of a Chair

  • Ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.
  • Ensure that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.
  • Ensure the organisation uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives: the organisation must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objectives, no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are.
  • Contribute actively to the board of trustees’ role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.
  • Safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
  • Ensure the financial stability of the organisation.
  • Protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure the proper investment of the charity’s funds.
  • Appoint the senior management team and monitor their performance.

Other Duties

In addition to the above statutory duties:

  • Scrutinising board papers.
  • Providing guidance on new initiatives.
  • Representing the charity to external stakeholders and/ or donors.
  • Other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain oversight of responsible use of the charity’s resources and ensure long term financial sustainability of the organisation.
  • Ensure that strategic and operational risks are managed effectively.
  • Act as an advocate and be one of the public faces of the organisation.
  • Support senior staff by providing expertise to support work on our strategy, development and operations.
  • Identify funding/building opportunities and assist with developing relationships with existing and potential funders.

Time Commitment

It is anticipated that the Board will meet every 8-12 weeks. Trustees may establish sub-groups, such as a finance sub group to examine specific projects.

Length of appointment

The terms of appointment will be three years, with the possibility to extend for a further term.


Board and Committee meetings are normally held in Central London.

The positions of Chair and Trustees are honorary, un-remunerated and non-pensionable.

Appointees will be entitled to be reimbursed for travel and other expenses reasonably incurred in performing their role in connection with the Board.
