English Heritage cares for over 420 historic buildings, monuments and sites, from world-famous prehistoric places to grand medieval castles; from Roman forts on the edges of the empire to a Cold War bunker. Historically a public sector body, we made a bold transition to become a charitable organisation in April 2015. Our plans are rightly ambitious but we believe we can achieve our aims and our first four years of autonomous performance have been strong.
Our Board plays a critical leadership and governance role and our Trustees bring valuable expertise and strategic insight to help us realise the untapped potential for the organisation.
We are conscious, however, that as our financial support from Government continues to reduce, we need to continue to build our fundraising capability, reaching out to donors around the world to support our work. In the last four years we have entered into a number of strategic partnerships and we have found ways to engage a wide group of donors in our work, whose generosity is helping us to achieve our ambitions.
To that end, and as we continue to progress through this important chapter of transformational change, we're seeking a high-calibre Trustee with significant experience of networking and engagement with philanthropic communities. This role may appeal, for example, to candidates who have operated as part of a development committee or a campaign board for a major institution. And this person must have a real passion for the work that we do and possess the governance and leadership skills that we expect in all Trustees.
Trustees are expected to attend four Board meetings per year (two of which involve overnight stays in one of our regions and are followed by site visits), and also an annual discussion day. You may also be invited to join one of the Board's sub-committees. Trustee posts are un-remunerated, but all reasonable expenses are paid. If you are excited by this opportunity and have the experience required to help us become a thriving, community-oriented and well-loved charity, then we would be delighted to hear from you.
More information can be found in the attached pack. Applications are by CV and covering letter. Our Head of HR, Andrew Kennedy, is more than pleased to talk to potential candidates informally, prior to application. Andrew's contact details can be found in the attached applicant pack.
Closing date: 2 September 2019.
Interviews will take place in October 2019.
