HETAS – Non Executive Directors
HETAS is the national organisation working for consumer safety and the wider public interest in safe, efficient and environmentally responsible use of biomass and other solid fuels. Our sister company Woodsure is a wholly owned subsidiary providing a wood fuel quality scheme.
At the heart of our work is the registration of trained, competent installers, service engineers and chimney sweeps who meet the appropriate standards for the installation of biomass, wood-burning and other solid fuel appliances. We also provide information about appliances, fuels and installation practice, based on our research. Our evidence is used in determining national and international standards.
Both HETAS and Woodsure are not-for-profit companies, owned by our members. Both companies work closely with national and local government.
About the roles
We are currently seeking to appoint two non-executive directors to support our Chair, Richard Wakeford, and offer expertise, skills and networks to help deliver our aims. This is an interesting and potentially challenging period for our sector. Air quality is increasingly a concern, especially in urban areas. At the same time, the use dry wood based fuels can play a significant role in climate change strategies.
Our non-executive directors contribute the usual roles of strategy and delivery, scrutiny and challenge. And at this time, with the Government implementing a new, clear direction for future air quality standards and implementation, the HETAS Board would benefit from new members with a keen science-based interest in public health and the future environment.
More generally, we need our non-executive directors to be comfortable working in the context of a not-for-profit membership driven environment.
In short, candidates will have a proven track record of senior management and/or leadership within the private, public or voluntary sector - ideally with a fuel, technical/scientific or consumer safety expertise. We are looking for candidates with strong business skills, especially in management accounting, risk management and service delivery and an ability to analyse data with a view to influencing company strategy and the wider industrial and public policy agenda.
A keen interest or experience in the future environment or public health and safety would be advantageous. Candidates need to be politically astute, futures focused and have the ability to discuss and participate in the themes that drive our business.
Each role is expected to be 1 day per month on average, and attracts £3,600 per annum remuneration + reasonable expenses.
