£25,000 per annum (plus an extra £3,000 for Chairing a Board Committee)

Three year fixed-term contract with a minimum of 27 completed days per year (circa two days per month)

Highways England is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the most important communications network in the country – the Strategic Roads Network. This network is valued at just over £104Bn and carries approximately one-third of all road traffic in England. Following their transition to a Government-owned commercial entity in 2015, they are now in their third year of a ground-breaking £11BN Road Investment Strategy, with a view to creating smoother, smarter and more sustainable roads/motorways for the public.

The organisation’s Board is collectively responsible for the success and effectiveness of the organisation. This is comprised of the Chairman, Chief Executive, Chief Finance Officer along with several Non-Executive Directors. They are now keen to appoint a new Non-Executive Director to join the Board, with a focus on Finance, Risk, Audit and Assurance.

As a Non-Executive Director, you will work towards ensuring the success of the organisation against its objectives, which will typically include encouraging and challenging their Executive Directors, contributing to strategic debate, along with monitoring performance against agreed business strategy and budget plans. You will prepare for, and make an effective contribution to the Board, with additional responsibility for Chairing the organisation’s Audit and Risk committee.

An experienced Finance Director or Chief Finance Officer, you will have an interest and passion for contributing excellence to organisation’s working in the public realm. You will have worked at Board level either for a large and complex organisation, and/or be a former Partner of a major Audit Firm. You will have strong communication and influencing skills and be able to challenge constructively. Stakeholders in this role will include the Executive team, politicians and industry providers.
