Independent Commissioners for Standards - House of Lords
Recruiter: House of Lords
Salary: £90,000 per annum, pro-rata, five days a month
Posted: 14 Jan 2021
Closes: 10 Feb 2021
Job Function: Leadership / Management
The House of Lords expects the highest standards of conduct from its members. It has a robust Code of Conduct, which has been significantly reformed over the years. Most recently, in April 2019, the provisions of the Code were extended to cover allegations of bullying, harassment, and sexual misconduct, in addition to other issues such as registration and disclosure of interests.
The House relies on the expertise of its independent Commissioner for Standards to consider, investigate and report on complaints that the Code of Conduct may have been breached. The most recent extension of the Code has increased the caseload being dealt with by the current Commissioner, whose non-renewable term ends on 31 May 2021. The House is therefore now seeking to replace the current incumbent with two Commissioners for Standards.
This is challenging, often high-profile, work—and it has an essential role to play in securing public confidence in the House.
These roles require individuals with senior level records of achievement within complex organisations in the public, private, or not-for-profit sectors. Candidates will have strong experience of investigative type work alongside excellent analytical and decision-making skills, and the ability to produce clear reports. You will need to be comfortable working under close parliamentary, media and public scrutiny and able to show how you have handled often very sensitive allegations of the above nature, as well as questions of equality, diversity, and inclusion, with tact and discretion. Candidates will convince that they can inspire respect and confidence at all levels of the House on account of their excellent judgement and communication skills, and that they will undertake the role with the utmost personal integrity, fairness, and independence.
