Basildon & Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Trust - Non Executive Director

Basildon & Thurrock University Hospitals NHS TrustRemuneration: £12,500 per annum

Location: Basildon

Closing date: 29 January 2016

Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s vision is to be an excellent provider of high quality, safe, care for our community. We put care and compassion at the heart of everything we do and our aim is to ensure that patients receive the very best care the NHS has to offer.

The Trust is rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission who described our services as effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Basildon Hospital was the first in the country to be rated as ‘outstanding’ for maternity care and our ambition is to become ‘outstanding’ in as many services as possible over the coming months and years.

Our Trust provides an extensive range of acute healthcare services for a population of 405,000 in south west Essex, at Basildon University Hospital and Orsett Hospital. We also provide specialist cardiothoracic services for the whole of Essex and further afield at The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, which has a reputation for leading developments in cardiac surgery.

As one of the busiest acute trusts outside London, last year we treated 80,442 inpatients and day patients, provided 387,500 outpatient appointments and attended to 111,506 patients in accident and emergency. Our dermatology unit serves the whole of south Essex, and our renal unit is the largest in the county.

We are part of UCLPartners, an academic health and science partnership with over 40 members who together form one of the world’s leading centres of medical innovation and education to bring about improvements in healthcare.

With a challenging landscape across our health economy, we are working with our partner providers and commissioners to transform how patients access and receive high quality care in the future. This will mean considerable service transformation for all concerned as we work to break through what have been traditional organisational barriers to embed real change.

The next few years will therefore offer you a rich mix of strategic and commercial challenges as we will need to achieve substantial change whilst working collaboratively with our partners. In order to help drive forward our plans and position the Trust as a leading provider of healthcare locally, we are recruiting a Non-Executive Director following a very successful full term having been served by the current incumbent.

As a Non-Executive Director you will:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of executive and non-executive roles.
  • Identify and understand the important strategic issues facing the Trust.
  • Promote the highest standards of corporate governance.
  • Challenge views with confidence and rigour, whilst maintaining constructive relationships both internally and externally.
  • Listen sensitively to the views of others, inside and outside the Board, and gain the trust, respect and confidence of a range of audiences and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate sound political awareness; and
  • Possess a passion for providing the best in healthcare.

We are interested in hearing from candidates with experience of working either within the private or wider public service sector who feel that they have a contribution to make. Ideally, you will have worked at board or an equivalent level previously and have a professional background in organisational development, change management or inter-agency/partnership working.

The Board is underrepresented with members from a black or ethnic minority background and the Trust is warmly encouraging applications from suitably qualified BME candidates. To find out more, or to apply, please contact Simon Potts at Veredus on 07889 736 071 or David Rason on 0207 932 4212 or email VeredusHealthTeam@veredus.co.uk quoting reference: 927458.
