Oxford Brookes University is a leading modern university, employing around 1,900 staff in a wide variety of roles, who work together to deliver high-quality, innovative approaches to learning, teaching, research and professional services. It is an ambitious, thriving institution with a well-deserved reputation for excellence.
The Board of Governors is responsible for determining the overall mission and setting the educational character of the University. The Board approves the University's eight key objectives, the academic plan, and core strategies. The Board is also responsible for monitoring the performance of the University. The University's accounts indicate that Oxford Brookes' financial performance is strong. The University is currently investing £220 million to redevelop its campuses.
Oxford Brookes is currently seeking two Independent Governors to join the Board. Independent Governors are full members of the Board and engage with matters of University character and strategy, contributing to the overall success of Oxford Brookes. The University has recently published the Vision 2035, which has been developed in close dialogue with the students, staff, and the wider stakeholder community. The Strategy 2020-2025 centres around four pillars: Education and Enterprise; Research and Innovation; Partnership and Place; and People and Culture, and is guided by principles of Confidence, Enterprising Creativity, Connectedness, Generosity of Spirit, and Inclusivity.
At this time, Oxford Brookes would particularly value Independent Governors who could offer an understanding of the UK Higher Education or Secondary Education sectors, who would also bring successful strategic leadership experience, coupled with a strong commitment to Higher Education, and to optimising the transformative power of a university. Independent Governors will also share the University’s commitment to equality, diversity, openness, and transparency.
In keeping with all the non-executive roles, this is an unpaid position but with appropriate expenses reimbursed. The anticipated time commitment is approximately 10 – 14 days per year.
The University has adopted equality, diversity and inclusion as core values, and aims to be a genuinely inclusive organisation for staff, students and the wider community. Recruitment and career progression with the University are determined only by the selection criteria for the role. We welcome applications from suitably qualified applicants whatever their background, especially BAME candidates whose representation in our workforce we would like to increase.
