St Albans School is an academically selective school, educating approximately 890 boys aged 11 to 18 and girls in the Sixth Form. It is one of the oldest independent schools in the country, was a direct grant school for some of the 20th century and today is known for providing an environment where pupils thrive, both academically and through the pursuit of their wider interests. The School places heavy emphasis on service to others and is also genuinely committed to bursary provision. Current pupil numbers are at a record high. The School is also financially secure and has an annual income of around £19million. It employs around 200 staff in total.
The School recognises and values its role in the local community; this ranges from being a large employer in the area, its custodianship of historic buildings such as the Abbey Gateway and its links to local state primary and secondary schools through its partnership scheme and community outreach via use of its facilities, including the extensive Woollam Playing Fields on the north side of St Albans.
The School’s Governing Body and Senior Leadership Team are enthusiastic about the opportunities for the future and are excited about the chance to work with a new Chair to lead the Governing Body through this next phase of the School’s history. They will work with an established and experienced leadership team at a time when there are many ongoing opportunities and challenges facing the independent sector, working from a position of strength in meeting these.
Strong candidates for the role will have senior leadership experience, will understand what effective governance looks like and will be excellent communicators. They will show a genuine interest in playing a role in supporting the development of young people and they will have a collaborative and people-focussed approach.
St Albans School is an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity and the creation of an inclusive environment for all employees. Employment selections are made according to suitability for the post, irrespective of background or protected characteristic.
The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must therefore be willing to undergo child protection screening and safer recruitment checks appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
