Role Description

St Paul’s is a complex, creative, exciting and iconic place. It is a national church, a space for worship and holiness, a place of debate and challenge, an architectural heritage centre and a multi-million pound visitor attraction.

At the heart of our vision and strategy is our mission ‘to enable people in all their diversity to encounter the transforming presence of God in Jesus Christ’. We would like to hold the Cathedral’s spiritual and commercial life together by working to make the Cathedral a place of hospitality and spiritual encounter and therefore, enable us to engage with and challenge the people of London and beyond with the good news of the Gospel of Christ. A particular theme of our vision is inclusion, and to engage with the issues of how to express the diversity of London appropriately in its life and work.

This is a particularly exciting time to join St. Paul’s as the impact and aftermath of the pandemic heightens our commitment to the wider community. Our current strategy is committed to focus on young people and mental health and we are now looking for additional expertise in this area to help guide, develop and inform our work in this area.

As a member of Chapter, you will be part of the trustee body directing the mission and business of one of the world’s most iconic and best-known institutions. In the current and immediate context, you will be helping St Paul’s as it comes through the COVID-19 crisis, delivering a sustainable organisation and helping further develop its Christian mission.

We are looking for candidates with a Christian commitment and a communicant member of the Church of England or other Christian Church. You will possess a deep understanding of and a real passion for mental health, young people and social justice with experience gained at a leadership level in a complex organisation; most likely in the charity, mental health and/or allied areas. Our ideal candidate will be expected to possess strong financial and commercial acumen, and have experience in leading an organisational structure and budget that corresponds to the Cathedral’s scale. This will be matched with a strong understanding of governance.

Alongside contribution to Chapter meetings candidates will be invited to play an ambassadorial role towards building networks and disseminate our message of inclusion and our focus on young people and mental health coherently and effectively.

Candidates will have the following responsibilities as a Chapter Member:

  • Sharing Chapter’s responsibility for the governance, oversight, and leadership of the Cathedral in its mission, ministry and operations
  • Providing external perspectives on the Cathedral and an element of challenge for full-time Chapter members in ensuring proper governance in all areas of Chapter’s work
  • Fully participating in Chapter meetings and as appropriate in other Chapter work and worship, seeing this as an expression of your Christian faith.
  • Advising and supporting the Dean, Canons, the lay Chief Executive (Registrar) and other staff and volunteers, with appropriate engagement with the Cathedral’s operations in order to understand the context in which decisions are made.
