The Guild of Health & St Raphael is an innovative Christian charity working in partnership with public health, and medical and psychological science and practice, to promote human flourishing.
We are at an exciting moment in the history of the charity as we have recently relaunched our membership communities after a period of reflection and review. The restructuring was inspired by the need to address our own financial deficit while developing resources to help meet the growing needs for community care and support for health and wellbeing. In doing so, we have reaffirmed our aims and objectives as an organisation and have focused the outputs of the charity so that we can meet these aims. We are also responding to the needs of our communities where mental health issues are on the increase and the health and care services are subject to ever increasing pressure to meet the demands and expectations placed on them. Individuals and communities are suffering.
Given there are more churches than health centres in the UK, with quality training and resourcing, churches can be well placed to help meet the challenges facing society.
The GoHealth Community resources individuals to connect the Christian faith with health. Members receive a monthly resource bundle, online training courses, reductions at events and an online community. The Healthy Healing Hub project aims to resource local churches by providing the theological bedrock, the confidence and the resources to meet some of the health needs of their community as part of their mission in the world. This project directly connects the health needs of the community with the mission of the church to bring human flourishing by:
- Promoting the church as a hub for health and healing.
- Learning from one another about how to promote human flourishing.
- Creating networks of people who are passionate in linking faith and health.
- Helping people to connect with the church as a hub for wellbeing.
- Praying for all who are suffering.
- Researching healing from an academic viewpoint.
Finally, the third membership community is Chrism which is for our academic and professional members. We publish a biannual journal and run an annual conference.
As we seek to build on this momentum, we are looking to appoint a new chair who will work with the Council of Trustees and the CEO to lead sustainable growth. As a Christian your background and experience will speak to our purpose and you will have the knowledge and experience to support our plans to help scale-up our work, develop the charity’s income by increasing membership through each of the hubs, and other incomes sources, and raise our profile.
The role will suit an experienced chair who understands good charity governance, can provide leadership and direction to the Trustee Council and enable it to provide robust governance and strategic direction. We are looking for someone who will enjoy mentoring and supporting our talented Chief Executive and help us realise our ambition to be the go-to place for health and healing in the UK.
We are ideally looking for someone who has experience in healthcare, healing, wellbeing or within a social care setting. You will need to be ecumenically oriented and have the strategic skills to assist us to achieve our planned growth.
The time commitment for the Chair is about 1-2 days a month spread across board and committee meetings, working with the executive and other engagements. The term of office is three years and can be extended for additional terms.
