Appointment of Chair of Council
Since its inception in 1963, the University of York, a member of the Russell Group, has become a globally recognised research-intensive university. York has been a pioneer in developing new academic thinking, influencing policy and driving discovery across a full range of disciplines. In the year 2014/15 the University’s income was over £330m and it has just under 4,000 staff. It is home to over 15,000 students and has over 30 departments and research centres on campus. The University’s major investment in its campus in the last decade (around £500m) provides world-class research and teaching facilities and student accommodation. The University of York’s determination to foster excellence has resulted in numerous accolades, including twice being awarded the title of University of the Year.
The Chair is responsible to the University’s stakeholders for the leadership of the Council. The Council plays a crucial role in the development of the University’s vision and strategic direction and ensures effective leadership and good governance. The University is seeking to appoint a new Chair of Court to succeed the existing Chair, Sir Christopher O’Donnell. This vacancy provides a rewarding opportunity to play a key role in building on the University’s recent successes and positioning the organisation for future strategic development.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with experience in, or comprehensive knowledge of, strategic issues within an organisation of comparable scale or complexity. They will bring an understanding of governance in comparable organisations, an awareness of the principles of public life, and a strong commitment to, and affinity for, higher education and the vision, strategic goals and values of the University of York. They will be able to demonstrate outstanding personal integrity as well as relevant professional expertise and the ability to engage with stakeholders at every level.
