Job Function: Trustees

Position Type: Permanent

The Maudsley Charity exists to promote positive change in the world of mental health. We support innovation, research and service improvement, and raise public awareness and understanding. Acting primarily as a grant giver, we focus our funds where we think they make the biggest difference to recovery and improved experience of care, supporting people to stay well and preventing serious mental illness. We are based at, and support the work of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, working closely with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience of King’s College London.
The Charity helps to fund ground-breaking service improvements, therapeutic programmes and mental health research. Significant endowment generates a healthy annual income, but there is ambition to grow reserves and income substantially to further increase the Charity’s impact for such an important cause.
The Maudsley Charity is embarking upon a new trustee recruitment process as it becomes a charity independent of the NHS. Being mindful of the long history of the Charity, the current pressures on the NHS, and growing level of acute mental health needs, the Trustees must consider the best interests of both current and future beneficiaries. They must have confidence that the overarching strategies, policies and plans deliver maximum benefit within the Charity’s remit. To achieve these aims, the Charity is keen to appoint individuals who will bring one or more of the following areas of expertise: fundraising, marketing or business/ opportunity development, strategy, board level commercial leadership, property development/management. Experience of charity governance is desirable but not essential. These newly appointed Trustees will be passionate about the part they will play in the improvement of mental health services and clinical treatment, and will bring energy and ambition to a charity deeply dedicated to its cause. The role is unpaid, and the time commitment is likely to be circa 6 meetings per year.
