Managing Director at The Alternative Board (Bristol North)", "How to become a Non-Executive Director
I found the course very helpful, as I wanted to understand in detail what a NED role entailed. I felt that I gained enough information not only to decide if this was the sort of role that I would be interested in, but also to be able to function in such a role. The guidance on seeking appointments was an added bonus. It was also an interesting day with a varied group of delegates and I would happily recommend it.

\'\'I attended this course shortly after starting my first Non-Executive Director role and found David’s expertise and insight to be invaluable. The course also covers practical things such as how to go about finding Non-Executive Director roles – and so last week (6 months after I attended the course) I started my second NED role, and have an interview for a third one next week. I can highly recommend attending this course for current or aspiring NEDs.

\'\'Right from the start of the Marketing for Non-Marketing Directors course, the importance of marketing strategy to the future of any company was made plain; Duncan was very clear about the pivotal nature of the role of the board in marketing strategy, and the consequences - for the long-term sustainability of the company - of failure to engage. The Tutor Trust – Trustee (Legal)

Trustee (Legal) - The Tutor Trust

Business / Organisation Name: Trustee (Legal) | The Tutor Trust
Business / Organisation Sector: Not-for-Profit
Business / Organisation Type: Charity or Not-for-Profit
Role Title: Trustee
Remuneration: Expenses only

Role Description

The Tutor Trust is an education charity rooted in tackling educational inequality in a unique way. We began life as a small pilot project in Manchester with big aspirations and a radical new idea to boost the educational opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people.

Our mission is to ‘transform lives through tutoring’ by ensuring every child who needs academic support can access a great tutor. We recruit and train bright university students as tutors in the core subjects of Maths, English and Science and place them in state schools.

To date we have recruited and rigorously trained over 1,800 tutors, provided over 100,000 hours of tutoring support, and supported over 15,000 pupils (mostly on free school meals or Looked After Children). Our interventions have supported disadvantaged young people to reach their full potential and have helped them lead happier and healthier lives.

We have won awards and today we are nationally recognised as one of the most innovative and impactful charities in the UK. We are at a crucial part of our development as we are now halfway through a three-year expansion plan in partnership with Impetus and EEF. The heart and soul of our plan is about maximising the positive impact of tuition, especially for disadvantaged pupils and so we plan to increase our number of beneficiaries by 70%. We want to refine our mission, create a new impact strategy, work smarter in targeting schools, change our programme design, improve how we recruit our amazing tutors and ensure we have robust systems, financial controls, and governance.

With this in mind, we are looking for a new Trustee who can support us on this next stage of our journey to be the best possible version of The Tutor Trust we can be. Earlier in the year, we welcomed a number of new Trustees to our board who have expertise across the education sector and we are looking to appoint a new Trustee in the new school term.

Who we're looking for:

As one of our Trustees, Jim Lister, comes to the end of his term, we are looking for a new Trustee to join us with expertise in the legal profession. While there are many different areas of the law, and the Tutor Trust is able to seek specific legal opinion where needed, we are looking for a Trustee who can apply legal critical thinking in their role on our Board. We are looking for someone who is passionate about tackling educational inequality and shares our vision and ambitious mission. This is an opportunity to lead an organisation through an exciting period of growth and to impact and transform education and lives through tutoring.

Our board meets six times a year with a strategy away day and an annual summer reception. We expect all our trustees to attend one tutoring session as an observer every year.

You will support the future development of The Tutor Trust, provide support and appropriate challenge to our senior leadership team and board and you will be an ambassador for our organisation.
