Managing Director at The Alternative Board (Bristol North)", "I had the pleasure of attending 'How to become a Non-Executive Director' one day course in Bristol yesterday delivered by David Doughty. The content, course leader and fellow attendees were a breath of fresh air. I went with an open mind, unsure whether my skill set and experiences were suitable and allow me to offer any value to a board. I left with no doubt that they were.

The course content was really informative and very pragmatic. At end of the day, not only did I understand the role and liabilities of a NED but also the legal framework within which they operate, the more technical areas that you need to be familiar with, where to find out more information specific to the company you are working with and how to find a NED position in the public, private and voluntary sectors. Above all though, I left with the confidence that I really did have something to offer.

For anyone wondering whether their future may include a NED position, I would recommend that you consider this course as a good starting point.

I can highly recommend this comprehensive and value-for-money all-day course. It was interesting to note that the course attracted a diverse range of interested participants, ranging from someone in their first job to an experienced member of committees, to someone who had substantial work experience, quite removed from the corporate arena, who wanted to learn about and explore opportunities as an NED. The course content was extremely relevant and helpful including the different routes to becoming an NED. On the basis of this training, attendees could feel more confident about embarking on the next stage of applying for opportunities leading in the long-term to an NED role or two. David clearly has a wealth of experience and is to be congratulated for his extremely useful training that has been pitched at the right (user-friendly) level for participants from diverse backgrounds. Remuneration: £309.06 per day
Location: Edinburgh, and to other locations throughout Scotland
Closing date: 13 February 2019 at midnight

Do you want to make a difference in communities across Scotland, changing lives for the better and improving safety for all? Do you have the skills and experience to take on the role of Chair of Community Justice Scotland?

Community Justice Scotland

The Scottish Government's vision for community justice is that Scotland is a safer, fairer and more inclusive nation where we: prevent and reduce further offending by addressing its underlying causes; and safely and effectively manage and support those who have committed offences to help them reintegrate into the community and realise their potential for the benefit of all citizens.

Community Justice Scotland, which was established in April 2017, is an ambitious organisation which is focused on promoting positive messages about people who are in contact with the criminal justice system and the need for a wider range of services to offer them support to address the reasons for their offending behaviour and prevent further offending. The organisation is still growing into its role and a recent Section 22 report from the Auditor General to the Parliament highlighted some challenges around governance arising in its first year of operation.

About the Chair Role

The new Chair will work with the Board and Chief Executive immediately to assure good foundations. They will seek to accelerate impact while ensuring the organisation is effective and maintains the highest standards of corporate governance and financial management. While building influential relationships with partners and stakeholders across the justice and social policy system, the Chair will have a focus on the future, and a strategic eye for how people, policy, and process come together in new ways to deliver improved services and innovative solutions within community justice.

The Chair will work closely with Scottish Government and Ministers in line with the Scottish Justice Strategy.

Priority Criteria

  • Experience as a Chair of building positive, performance focused relationships with both non-executive and executive colleagues.

Essential Criteria

  • A commitment to the highest levels of effective governance and scrutiny in the public sector
  • Ability to build effective and constructive relationships with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to oversee a change process within an organisation to drive the delivery of strategic priorities.

Desirable Criteria

  • An awareness of and commitment to community justice in Scotland and the environment in which it operates.

This position attracts a remuneration rate of £309.06 per day and the Chair will be expected to give a commitment of up to 30 hours (4 days) each month but no more than 300 hours (40 days) in the financial year.
