Do you want to make a difference in communities across Scotland, changing lives for the better and improving safety for all? Do you have the skills and experience to take on the role of Chair of Community Justice Scotland?
Community Justice Scotland
The Scottish Government's vision for community justice is that Scotland is a safer, fairer and more inclusive nation where we: prevent and reduce further offending by addressing its underlying causes; and safely and effectively manage and support those who have committed offences to help them reintegrate into the community and realise their potential for the benefit of all citizens.
Community Justice Scotland, which was established in April 2017, is an ambitious organisation which is focused on promoting positive messages about people who are in contact with the criminal justice system and the need for a wider range of services to offer them support to address the reasons for their offending behaviour and prevent further offending. The organisation is still growing into its role and a recent Section 22 report from the Auditor General to the Parliament highlighted some challenges around governance arising in its first year of operation.
About the Chair Role
The new Chair will work with the Board and Chief Executive immediately to assure good foundations. They will seek to accelerate impact while ensuring the organisation is effective and maintains the highest standards of corporate governance and financial management. While building influential relationships with partners and stakeholders across the justice and social policy system, the Chair will have a focus on the future, and a strategic eye for how people, policy, and process come together in new ways to deliver improved services and innovative solutions within community justice.
The Chair will work closely with Scottish Government and Ministers in line with the Scottish Justice Strategy.
Priority Criteria
- Experience as a Chair of building positive, performance focused relationships with both non-executive and executive colleagues.
Essential Criteria
- A commitment to the highest levels of effective governance and scrutiny in the public sector
- Ability to build effective and constructive relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Ability to oversee a change process within an organisation to drive the delivery of strategic priorities.
Desirable Criteria
- An awareness of and commitment to community justice in Scotland and the environment in which it operates.
This position attracts a remuneration rate of £309.06 per day and the Chair will be expected to give a commitment of up to 30 hours (4 days) each month but no more than 300 hours (40 days) in the financial year.

Philip had an excellent wealth of experience & practical knowledge of a wide number of industries and was really warm & welcoming- An asset to the course! I found the course very helpful, as I wanted to understand in detail what a NED role entailed. I felt that I gained enough information not only to decide if this was the sort of role that I would be interested in, but also to be able to function in such a role. The guidance on seeking appointments was an added bonus. It was also an interesting day with a varied group of delegates and I would happily recommend it.
